One of Us is Lying

“She’s a princess and you’re a jock,” he says. He thrusts his chin toward Bronwyn, then at Nate. “And you’re a brain. And you’re a criminal. You’re all walking teen-movie stereotypes.”
“What about you?” […]
“I’m the omniscient narrator,” Simon says.
[…] “There’s no such thing in teen movies.”
“Ah, but Bronwyn.” Simon winks and chugs his water in one long gulp. “There is such a thing in life.”

Summary
Five students from Bayview High walk into detention. Only four of them leave the classroom alive.
Who is the murderer?

Writing
The writing style is very crisp and natural. It’s easy and pleasant to read.

Characters
I actually enjoyed all of the main characters. I found their stories to be really interesting. Some of them are better developed than others, but overall it’s very easy to root for them.

Plot
I don’t know if it’s because I don’t read a lot of mysteries or not, but I didn’t predict the ending. Which, in my opinion, is the most important thing in a novel like this one.

When in comes to the rest of the book, I have to say I wasn’t bored at all. There were slower parts, but because I actually cared for the characters and wanted to know as much as possible about them, I was constantly interested in what was happening.

Overall
This is a really enjoyable young adult mystery novel. It also touched a lot of important subject in a way that I was very happy with. Among other things it talked about the struggle and fear of coming out, abusive and negligent parents and controlling and toxic relationships. I am really glad that I decided to read this book.

    1. I am actually more of a fantasy fan, but I am trying to dabble in other genres from time to time 😄 This is a fun book, but I think that the mystery aspect takes a backseat here. The characters, their life and development is much more important to the story, I think 😊
