Life is a book and there are a thousand pages I have not yet read.
Summary
It’s been a quiet few months for Tessa, Will and Jem. Too quiet. Is it possible that Mortmain took his Infernal Devices somewhere else? Or is he just waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike again?
Writing
I am in the process of rereading all of Cassandra Clare’s books and I can tell you that it’s an immensely satisfying process. Her writing style gets better and better with every single book and it brings me great joy to observe that.
My only complaint is that none of the characters in this book, in this whole trilogy really, have a very distinctive voice. Their perspectives all sound the same. Even Magnus who, after living for so many years, should have a voice that feels different than the one of a teenager. Even if he looks like one.
Characters
I am not going to lie. I care very little about the plot of this book. But these characters have a very special place in my heart. As I mentioned, I was rereading this novel, so I knew what was going to happen. I was pretty sure that I was prepared for it. Turns out I wasn’t. This book is so painful to read, but it’s the best kind of pain.
All of the characters in this book have such depth to them, it’s incredible. Even the side ones, the ones less important to the story, feel almost like a family to me. It’s an amazing novel. And even though pairing every character in a story with their soulmate during a course of a book is a little corny, I can’t help but feel happy for them.
I have only one regret. And that’s the fact that Tessa, Will and Jem weren’t in polyamorous relationship. It was set up perfectly and it would work SO WELL. SO WELL!
Plot
Cassandra creates amazing villains. And even though Mortmain is definitely my least favorite one (he’s a little too bland), he’s still someone you just love to hate. His motives make sense. In a very roundabout way, but they do. That makes this story very fascinating to follow.
Still, the plot isn’t the most important thing about this book, and it shows. Definitely the most pages are dedicated to interactions between the characters. And I couldn’t be happier about that. But I see that if you are not interested in them very much, this book might get pretty boring pretty quickly.
Overall
This book broke my heart. Again. I am definitely holding up much better, than the first time around, but it still wasn’t easy. It’s a wonderful end to a fantastic trilogy with the MOST PERFECT love triangle in the history of love triangles. I can’t recommend this series enough.
You can find this book on Goodreads, Book Depository and Amazon
Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices #1)
Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices #2)
One of my favorites ❤

I’m in the middle of rereading this series myself and I completely agree with you. While the plot is definitely good, the amazing characters are why I enjoy it so much – Tessa, Will and Jem are some of my all time favorite characters in the shadowhunter books! Great review!

I haven’t read that book yet but that’s how I felt about the Ever the Brave series the last book Once a King well it did have 2 characters from the other books but they weren’t the main characters and they weren’t even in it so that kinda made me think that it shouldn’t be considered a Ever the Brave series and I’m really not sure it is but when i bought them someone told me it did… well never listen to a random person and Barnes and Noble for advice about books lol

LOVE Cassandra Clare! I just started getting into her writing. I just finished Red Scrolls, and I am starting on the side story of Magnus Bane now!

Omg, I have such a long way to go before I can read it, because I am rereading all of the Shadowhunters books in chronological order. But you made me even more excited to read it now! I have to admit, Magnus is one of my favourite characters!

I keep hearing people say that Clare’s books get better as they go along, but I’m still stuck on City of Bones. I’m trying to read them in order haha. Glad you’re enjoying rereading them!

“I care very little about the plot of this book. But these characters have a very special place in my heart.” These are my exact thoughts about this book. But the plot did make me reduce my rating to 3/5 stars. I loved Will and Jem’s characters to pieces. So well crafted.

Well written. While I am still on book one of the series, its good to know the quality holds up throughout the later books as well.
