Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Samantha on Goodreads. This week’s topic is Love Interests You Would Have Broken Up With.
This topic was actually pretty challenging for me. I have a secret not-so-secret passion for trashy erotica. And these books more often than not are ridiculous and have absolutely garbage love interests. I have seen love interests mess with the MC’s birth control pills, break into their homes, stalk them, sleep naked under their bed or even stage a rape attempt. So I decided that it would be waaaay too easy to put them on this list. So I searched through my fantasy books. And even though I have a pretty impressive collection of characters I dislike, surprisingly very few of them are actually love interests. Maybe because they are so awful.
Yennefer – The Witcher
I know I am pretty alone with this opinion. But I dislike Yennefer with a fiery passion. I grew up on The Witcher and I feel very protective of Geralt, so that might be the reason – this woman didn’t treat him right. In fact, she didn’t treat anyone right. And I love a good, old, selfish character. But her behaviour was too much for me. If I were Geralt I would have dumped her ass in a second.
Pestilence – The Four Horsemen
Okay, I admit. I put this character here only because this whole book is so incredibly funny to me. But yeah, I am pretty sure that I would have broken up with AN ACTUAL PESTILENCE. I MEAN COME ON.
Mustang – Red Rising
Mustang is an amazing character. But she’s a shitty love interest. I am sorry, I just can’t imagine falling asleep next to a person whose loyalty I can never be sure of. She’s way too shifty for me. This whole thing with not telling anyone your plans works great as a plot device, but it’s doing much worse in a relationship.
Montes – The Fallen World
I am aware that it’s another Laura Thalassa’s book on this list. But that girl keeps on creating love interests that I just love to hate. Honestly, I don’t think that there is a person on this planet that comes with as much baggage as Montes. I don’t want to spoil this trilogy for you but just imagine a murderous, self-obsessed tyrant and you get a pretty accurate picture of who he is. Thank you, I’ll pass on this one.
Mal – The Grisha
I am not going to get into detail, because I really don’t want to spoil this series for anyone, but this guy gets worse and worse as the story progresses. And I was tired of him before the first book in this trilogy even ended. I just don’t see the appeal of someone who is threatened by the fact that you are powerful and only started to show interest in you, once you started to look hot. I mean, he was by Alina’s side since they were kids, right? He had plenty of time to make his move. Yeah, no thank you. In this house we only stan Nikolai Lantsov (and The Darkling – but in secret).
Do you know any of these characters? Would you break up with them as well?
It’s hilarious that Mal seems to be a consistent name in this post on many blogs… I completely agree 👍👍

I would’ve definitely broken up with Mal. I only read the first book but while I support people ship whatever they want– I don’t understand what some people see in him.

Haha, same here 🙈 Even if you are not bothered by his behaviour, he is just so… bland.

Nope, only read the first book. I absolutley love the authors other series (The Bargainer) but I didn’t like this one because of Montes!

I agree with you on Mustang- awesome character, crappy love interest.

Hahaha I agree with you on Mustang!!! You would never know if she is going to literally stab you in the back or not. Oh and I would have loved if Alina and Nikolai ended up together….sigh.

Right? I shipped them so hard! Though now I am reading King of Scars and I am not so sure anymore, haha

You can break up with Yennefer in Witcher 3 but the only other option is Triss Merigold who’s not much better. I think his true love is his work. Or my true love is his work, I’m not sure which.

I know. I broke up with her in Witcher 3. What a blessing it was that she didn’t appear in The Witcher 1 and 2, haha. But yeah, Triss from the game isn’t much better.

Mustang! Oh I totally agree. I think their relationship could be so much more, but everything is so shifty (especially in RR) that is was hard to get behind. She’s definitely not a well developed love interest.

Right? Tbh for some reason I really wanted Darrow and Victra to end up together. She just seemed much more… stable, I guess.

I don’t even know what Alina saw in Mal. He was mean to her until she was pretty and even then he was still s really boring character.

Right? He was so dull 😪

Hahaha Mal. Poor Mal. He’s so lame. But Yenn?! lol. She is pretty shitty as a love interest- but I’m pretty sure Geralt isn’t much better either. I always felt like that was what worked about them.

Yeah, he’s not great either. But the stuff Yennefer did always felt like too much for me. But like I said, I’ve always felt protective of Geralt.

I always felt like Geralt liked it. Like maybe he’s a Secret glutton for punishment. Totally get where you are coming from.

Hahah, he definitely was into it, since he was so hung up on her!

I don’t know those characters but I love the idea of calling out not good love interests!
